Tax rebate
What is it
A Tax Rebate, is a rebate you can claim from the HMRC for your overpaid Tax.
A Tax Rebate can be claimed after each tax year although, a tax year is not the same as a normal year. A tax year starts on the 6th of April and ends on the 5th of April the following year.
You may claim a Tax Rebate up to 5 years if you have not claimed before.
Why would you have over paid Tax?
- You had more than one Job
- You did not work a full tax year
- You were on the incorrect Tax code ie BR
Because tax gets calculated with the assumption that you're going to be employed for the total duration of a tax year. And the more you earn the more tax you pay. So if then, for any reason, you do NOT work the complete tax year you probably paid too much tax.
Leaving the UK
You can claim a tax rebate for the current tax year if you're leaving the UK (or you've already left the UK) and you're not planning to return to work in the UK before the end of the tax year. So if you're leaving the UK, or you already left, you can claim a tax rebate for any tax year if you've already left your last job in the UK.
